Roy Lovelady's Last Dance
Roy Lovelady has never been just one thing.
He owns and operates the 360 Star Styling Studio, a joint dance studio and hair salon in Columbia, Mo. He is the Third Ward representative and the only out, gay Black man on the Columbia City Council. And he is Mahajanay DeMornay, an effervescent drag queen known across the state for her prowess in pageantry.
After two decades of competition, the 50th Miss Gay Missouri America pageant will be his last shot at becoming a Forever and qualifying for a slot in the national competition.
In preparation for the pageant, Lovelady spent more than $5,000 on costumes alone. By the end of the pageant, the total cost to compete would climb to roughly $16,000. The prize for first place is only $800.
In all the roles he takes on, Lovelady sees himself as a kind of community therapist. He said his service to his community and the pressure to perform in pageants—and to win—has consumed him. He’s ready to leave it all behind.
“What is next for me is to live, to love, consistently, and as much as possible,” Lovelady said. “I want to find my own level of happy.”
Note: Roy Lovelady identifies as a man, using he/him pronouns. When performing as the drag character Mahajanay DeMornay, she/her pronouns are preferred — as a nod to the transformation at the center of drag performance. Photo captions will use these different identifiers throughout.
